Cinemagraph 2 – (1010 WINS AM)

What’s a Cinemagraph?

The process of making cinemagraphs looks easy but it is misleading when it comes to making them different from animated GIFs is the mentality behind the animation. Sure cinemagraphs show a specific part of a photograph to be animated, but it has to have a sense that everything around the subject is supposed to move.

Why WINS AM?

WINS AM is a NY talk only radio station featuring news around the globe. The reason why I picked WINS AM for my second cinemagraph is from the branded slogan, “You give us 22 Minutes, We’ll give you the world”. When I found the slogan I had an idea of what to use for a cinemagraph, a globe, with things in the background giving the globe a reflection.

The Process

When creating this Cinemagraph I borrowed a friend’s Puzzle Globe and brought them to a computer screen. I looked up Stock Market Tickers in the form of GIFs for constant movement. I brought both camera and globe close to the screen and turned the lights off. After the props are set, I spun the globe to create a good amount of motion blur. I then took a 1 minute recording of 3 spins. Bringing this to Cinemagraph Pro, I only masked out the globe for constant movement, and turned everything else that isn’t supposed to move in the background to gray-scale. Thanks to Onlykota for supplying the Globe for the cinemagraph. What I learned form this is to value time and place along with people’s privacy no matter who they are.

Storyboard

When planning for the cinemagraph I had several ideas in mind and some ideas were presented. The first idea I had was having a Spinning globe with a crowd for a background. However, Rick M. Mentioned about having the Globe Spinning in a classroom with the stock market ticker. so then i decided to have another idea, which was traveling to a Mall/ Electronic store where there’s lots of people and lots of monitors hopefully showing movies and news, and having a whole line of people just staring at the monitors/TVs while the globe is in the foreground. Due to photography restrictions, I was unable to have a very striking comp. So I improvised to something small, you’re simple Computer monitor with lots of animated GIFs displayed.
