What’s a Cinemagraph?

The process of making cinemagraphs looks easy but it is misleading when it comes to making them different from animated GIFs is the mentality behind the animation. Sure cinemagraphs show a specific part of a photograph to be animated, but it has to have a sense that everything around the subject is supposed to move.

Why Verizon?

When I found the slogan for Verizon, I figured that having a person complaining or at least acting like they have phone problems in a crowded place be a great idea for a Cinemagraph. The slogan I used was “Can you hear me now” which just gives me the illusion of someone on the phone struggling to listen in a noisy and occupied environment.

How it’s done

When making the Cinemagraph, the whole composition was sharp in quality, however, it loses some Depth of field, so I decided to use the blur tool to apply the depth of field to everything but the 4th of the screen that I take up. After the Photoshop work I import the image to Cinemagraph Pro and brought masked out the sharpest parts of the image, this gives all the movement to the sharpest part of the image and makes the eye drawn to the specific part of the image. Again I had a bunch of friends ignores the camera to complete the cinemagraph with some motion blur. When making this Cinemagraph, I learned that permissions from other people are crucial and to respect regulations of certain areas before doing any operations.

Storyboard

My first thought when making this cinemagraph was to make a scene outdoors during a rainy day and having a person yelling at the phone. that didn’t really work out since the majority of the time, the weather is beautiful. So then I decided to go with a more controlled environment which was a busy mall. The idea was also scraped since that will be a borderline privacy issue for people. Finally, I went for a more cozy environment where I have a person sitting down and talking on the phone semi-aggressively, and having a group of people minding their own business.
